Death benefits

If you die as an active member of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), a lump sum death grant of 3 times your annual pensionable pay is payable as requested in your Death Grant Nomination Form.

If you also have a previous period of LGPS membership (known as deferred), we will calculate the death grant payable from the active period of membership and the deferred period of membership – and will pay whichever is the higher amount.

Completing a Death Grant Nomination Form will allow you to nominate one or more individuals or organisations to receive payment of the death grant.

If you have not completed a Death Grant Expression of Wish Form the payment will be made to your Estate / Personal Representatives, but payment could take longer.

We will always try to pay your Death Grant to the person(s) nominated, however, we are not legally bound by the nomination and Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Pension Fund has absolute discretion how your Death Grant is paid.

Please remember to keep your Death Grant Nomination Form up to date at all times.

Survivor Benefits

The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) provides cover for your family in the event of your death, with pensions for your survivors – which can be either your Spouse, Registered Civil Partner or, subject to certain qualifying conditions, your eligible cohabiting partner, plus eligible children.

The survivor’s pension is payable to your spouse, registered civil partner or, your eligible co-habiting partner (certain qualifying conditions apply) for their lifetime.

For a survivor’s pension to be paid to your eligible cohabiting Partner, all of the following conditions must have applied for a continuous period of at least 2 years before your death:

  • you are both free to marry or enter into a civil partnership with each other
  • you have been living together as if you were husband and wife, or civil partners
  • neither of you have been living with someone else as if you were husband and wife or civil partner
  • your partner is financially dependent on you or you and your partner are interdependent on each other.

Children's Pensions

If an active member of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) dies leaving one or more eligible child, they would be entitled to a children’s pension, and payable from the day after the member’s death.

Children who are eligible can be legitimate, illegitimate or adopted, or any child who has been accepted as a member of the family, and dependent on the member while he/she was still contributing to the Scheme.

If the eligible child has a physical or mental disability, which started before they were aged 18, the child pension will be payable for as long as the disability continues.

Pensions can also be paid to children over the age of 18, providing that they remain in full time continuous education, or undertaking an approved training course for at least 2 years.
